Whew-weee

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

It has been a while since my last post - a shame really especially when people like Joe from Vancouver are often sitting around wondering “where is that guy?” and “do toenails really grow slower than fingernails?”. Here I am and yes Joe, toenails grow slower than fingernails.

It is the CJSW Funding Drive right now and things are going great. This week there are some great events happening like the “Name that Tune’ at Bamboo Lounge/Drum and Monkey Pub on 12 Avenue and 1st Street SW Monday night and the Hair Metal Cover Night at the Liberty Lounge at Mount Royal College this Friday.  Go to http://www.cjsw.com/ for all the scoop and skinny. Pledge on-line or call in at 403-220-8224.

You know it is time for bed when you rent ‘The Ringer’. Not as bad as I thought it could be but then again, what does one honestly expect when Johnny Knoxville is playing a guy trying to cover some debts by winning a medal in the Special Olympics?

1986-2002 Prisoners Of Love

It’s Wednesday

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

It’s Wednesday and I just heard that David Bowie - aka ‘The Thin White Duke’ - will be making a guest appearance on ‘Spongebob Squarepants’. No word yet if Iggy Pop will be joining Spongebob and Bowie under the sea but I certainly hope Iggy avoids wearing his plastic pants. He wouldn’t want to get crabs in there…

CJSW Funding Drive is just about to “giver”. It all starts Friday October 20 at 9am and runs through to Friday October 27 at 6pm. Check out www.cjsw.com over the next few days to see the swag this year and what great events we have planned for the week. Highlights will be posted soon.

Tubby Dog’s Oktoberfest is this Thursday October 12. DJ Crag and the Brebec Boys will be oompa oompa pa-pa-ing from 8pm on. Wear something nice - in green - and don’t forget your dancing shoes. I plan on heading down after Wordfest

Lastly, got a chance to interview the Right Honorable Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General from 1999-2005 today. Listen to CJSW to find out when this interview will take place.

Oh Arnold

California is truly one fantastic state. Hollywood, earthquakes, Jack on the sidelines at Laker games - you name it. The best part about California? Democracy.

You may recall the California election a few moons ago where Gary Coleman battled pretty much everyone in the contest for Governor. In the end Arnold Schwarzenegger won and became forever known as the “Governator”.

It is election time once again in California. Check out the latest proclaimation from Arnold to try and win over state workers after trying to cut back their pensions. Nice work.

PROCLAMATION
Managing the affairs of the eighth-largest economy in the world is no small task.
Without the dedicated team of men and women who work for California, our state’s
progress and prosperity would come to a grinding halt.

Few organizations in the world call upon such a fantastic array of talents to ensure
that its goals are met. In California, we rely on state workers who represent almost
every field imaginable: law enforcement, medicine, information technology, food
services, administrative support, law, engineering, education, science, maintenance,
aviation and architecture, just to name a few. Each serves in a different capacity,
but all serve the common good of our Golden State.

Today is a special day set aside to honor the tremendous accomplishments of each
and every one of our more than 215,000 state workers. No matter the
responsibility, they are an integral part of what makes our state the successful and
enjoyable place it is to live, work and play. I extend my gratitude for their
contributions towards making California the greatest state in the greatest nation in
the world.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the
State of California, do hereby proclaim October 4, 2006, as “Thank You State
Workers Day.”

IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 3rd day of October 2006.

Need some useless information to pass on to the unsuspecting?

- Takeru Kobayashi holds the world record for hot dog eating - 53 and 3/4 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes. That is about 4.5 hot dogs per minute. Imagine what that does to your colon?

- The recipe for an Elvis special - a deep-fried peanut butter and banana sandwich - requires a pound of butter for each sandwich. Imagine what that does to your colon?

- Once I had an ice cream sandwich that tasted like pickles when it wasn’t supposed to. Imagine what that did to my colon…

A puck in the head

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Every Monday night I play hockey. Although improving, I am really not very good. Last night, like almost every night, I took a puck in the noggin’. My Jim Kyte helmet special saved the day and, from what I can tell, a goal. I think the puck careened off of the side of my bucket, hit the goalie, hit the crossbar and then flipped to the corner. One of my first ice hockey goals was scored off of my head as I fell towards the net. My teammate later told me that he had shot at my me thinking I had a pretty good chance of deflecting the puck towards the net. “I guess I was right - Didn’t think you would fall into my shot though…” I am pretty sure I am going shopping for a new helmet this week.

Playlist..Uhhh..list

In the interest of the fans and my allergy to them all, here is a list of the songs I played last week on ‘Allergy to the Fans’- Friday September 29 2pm to 4pm MST. I was also fortunate to have the chance to talk to filmmaker Todd Whitham and songwriter Jason Chesworth who were in town for the Calgary International Fillm Festival. They were promoting the film ‘Saturday Night at Morley Gibsons’ which documents the making of a record by Jason’s group The Pocket Co. And, if it couldn’t get any better, Elizabeth May - the new leader of the Green Party  - stopped by for a chat while on campus to speak to members of the Alberta wing of the Green Party.

Ahhh yes - the list of tunes:
A-Bones “Rock the Boat”
The Alarm Clocks “No Reason to Complain”
The Tradewinds “Aba-daba-do-Dance”
Supersuckers “Here I Am”
Ultra Violet Booze Catastrophe “Long Tall Texan”
The Count Five “Psychotic Reaction”
Skid Roper “Polka polka”
Mr. T Experience “Tomorrows Harsh Mistress”
Nick Cave “Wanted Man”
The Pocket Co. “Fine Looking Woman”
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet “Popcorn”
Flaming Lips (Live at KCRW in LA) “Buggin”
Sufjan Stevens “Chicago”
Architecture in Helsinki “Frenchie, I’m Faking”
Swingin’ Neckbreakers “Good Lovin’”
The Amboy Dukes “Baby Please Don’t Go”
Archie Bronson Outfit “KINK”
Project Bicycle
Montgolfier Brothers “Even If My Mind Can’t Tell You”
The Tyde “County Line”

The show also included a lovely reading of Al Pacino’s “Any Given Sunday” locker room speech by CJSW’s own K-Dawg. Magic really…

Well - Welcome to Allergy to the Fans

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

Yes indeed - Very exciting times for me. This is my first foray into the world of having my own web page. For the record, I am still not sure this Internet thing will stick around. The abacus is making a big comeback in some tech circles and I think that I read somewhere that smoke signals would be popular too if it wasn’t for city bylaw restrictions and the lack of good firewood. Oh and the wind - that can really bugger up ones attempts at communicating with smoke.

‘Allergy to the Fans’ is the name of my radio show on CJSW Radio in Calgary, Alberta Canada. I try to play a wide mix of music, interview a number of different guests and in general, goof off to anyone willing to listen. I hope to post a collection of thoughts, pictures and stories for you to enjoy. Stay tuned….
